Our Emergency Department is located next to Doylestown Hospital's main entrance, with easy drive-up and drop-off patient access. When entering the Hospital's main campus from Route 202 (West State Street), follow signs to the main entrance of the Emergency Department (facing State Street).

Parking

Drop your patient and other passengers off at the entrance of the Emergency Department before parking. Parking options include:

• Free valet services are available at the Main Lobby for patients and visitors Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5 pm. The Main Lobby is adjacent to the entrance of the Emergency Department.
• Self-parking is available in lots that border West State Street or adjacent to the Ambulatory Center.
• Handicapped parking is available in a lot directly opposite our Emergency Department entrance.
• The parking garage is a short walk away from our Emergency Department entrance and is available 24 hours a day for a $2 daily fee.

When to Go to Our Emergency Department

Best equipped to treat severe or life-threatening illness and injury, our emergency department is the place to go when the situation cannot wait. Call 9-1-1 or go the nearest hospital emergency department if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

• Chest pain
• Breathing difficulty
• Severe abdominal pain
• Coughing blood
• Compound fracture (bone protruding through the skin)
• Sudden weakness, confusion or slurred speech
• Changes in vision
• Feeling any other significant, possibly life-threatening distress

An experienced staff member personally greets you as you enter the Emergency Department and evaluates your level of medical need immediately using standardized triage criteria.

Triage criteria is used to swiftly and accurately categorize our patients into severity groups, particularly during busy periods. This ensures that the most critically ill or injured patients are seen as quickly as possible.

If you cannot safely wait until a space in the clinical area becomes available, you will be taken to a critical care area. If you have a nonlife-threatening condition, you will be treated in the Minor Acute Care Unit (MACU), where the goal is to have you diagnosed, treated and discharged as quickly as possible.

Our Emergency Department is designed to enhance every aspect of the patient care experience, with an emphasis on positive outcomes, safety and comfort. The clinical area features the latest technologies that complement our experienced and dedicated emergency physicians, nurses  and other health care providers.

• Dedicated, advanced emergency technology that includes a low-dose CT scanner and all-digital X-ray technology to ensure quick access to diagnostic services
• Thirty-nine private treatment rooms, each with a private bathroom, flat screen TV and wireless Internet access and space to accommodate family members
• Specialized pediatric and critical care rooms
• Separate waiting rooms for children and their families
• An emphasis on infection prevention with an experienced around-the-clock housekeeping team
• Specially equipped to treat victims of sexual assault or domestic abuse, and to handle hazardous materials incidents

Most visits to the emergency room are not planned and are often accompanied by feelings of anxiety. When you or a loved one is sick or injured, you may need some guidance about making your trip as efficient as possible.

Being well prepared can help ease the stress of needing to visit the emergency room. If possible, please bring the following:

• Photo identification
• Health insurance card/information
• List of prescription medications and dosages that you currently take
• List of medications to which you are allergic
• Recent test results related to your condition
• Emergency contact list
• Medical provider contact information

Other items you may need for comfort:

• Cell phone and charger
• Breast pump (if you are breastfeeding) and cooler to store pumped milk
• Glasses and/or hearing aids

Studies show that a calm, peaceful environment can positively affect patient outcomes. We take our patients’ emotional well-being seriously, which is reflected in the thoughtful design of the Emergency Department, including the placement of seating, the intensity of the lighting and the artwork displayed throughout the area.

Many generous donors and artists are responsible for the collection of landscape paintings, and glass and tile works featured in the Emergency Department waiting rooms and hallways.

Safe disposal of medications helps prevents drug abuse. Our medication disposal box is located in the Emergency Department lobby and is available for use by the community to safely discard unused or expired medications.

Through our Emergency Department and if deemed necessary, we have a variety of programs and services we can offer you:

• Doylestown Health Stroke Services: We are designated as a Stroke Resource Center by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, and is also a Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Center.

• Woodall Chest Pain Center: Our program focuses on rapid diagnosis and effective treatment when you’re experiencing symptoms of heart attack, with specially trained staff and rapid treatment protocols in place.

• Pediatric Emergency: Should your child have an immediate and serious need for care after the pediatrician's office hours, our Emergency Department has board-certified emergency physicians on staff who are experienced in tending to the medical needs of infants, children and adolescents.

• Crisis Intervention: In coordination with Lenape Valley Foundation, we offer acute psychiatric services, providing intervention for mental illness emergencies.

• SAFE Program: If you are a victim of sexual assault, you will receive immediate assistance through the SAFE program. Anyone who is a victim of sexual assault or personal violence should go to our Emergency Department immediately. Or, if that is not possible, call 215.345.2280 or 9-1-1 for help.
