Clinical Trials/Medical Research

The mission of Clinical Research at Doylestown Health is to promote the advancement of safe and effective care for our community by engaging in research, which may provide increased access to the latest technology and advanced drug therapies.

Clinical trials are carefully monitored patient studies that test potential new treatments and therapies; they are an essential part of advancing medicine. Careful review and analysis of the potential new treatments and therapies is required before new research treatments or devices can be made available to the public. These highly scrutinized processes make it possible to improve available care options and potentially, the quality of life for patients.

Research studies vary widely in what they require of a volunteer, but their ultimate purpose is always to gather knowledge that will help improve the health and well-being of all. Our hospital is actively involved in a variety of clinical trial research activities, including evaluating treatment options for cardiac, vascular, pulmonary, and renal conditions, and as well as many types of cancer.

To protect the rights and welfare of those who choose to take part in medical research, a committee called the Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews and approves all research studies at Doylestown Hospital. The IRB must monitor a research study until it is over.

If you have questions about medical research or about studies we are doing at Doylestown Health, please call our Medical Research Office at 215-345-2119.

Why is Research Important?

Designed to help determine the safety and effectiveness of investigational treatment options for many different medical conditions, clinical trials must take place before experimental therapies or devices are made available to the public.

For clinical trials to be successful, we rely on patient volunteers who meet specific criteria to participate in these studies. We conduct a clinical trial to obtain knowledge that can be used to develop and provide new treatment options with the ultimate goal of improving the health and well-being of patients.

Should I Participate in a Clinical Trial?

Choosing to participate in a clinical trial is an important, personal decision that is completely voluntary. Make your decision after you have carefully reviewed, discussed, and thought about any information you have been given. Many people find it helpful to talk with their health care provider, family members, or friends.

You are encouraged to ask many questions and to make sure you have the answers before you decide. And, you can ask questions at any time — even after you’ve chosen to participate. You are free to change your mind and may leave a study at any time. The way you are treated by our healthcare providers will not change.

Where Can I Find Out About Specific Clinical Trials?
