Doylestown Hospital Cancer Rehab Designated Among Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute’s Centers of Excellence

Oncology Rehab Named PORi Institute Center of Excellence | Doylestown Health
DOYLESTOWN, PA: Doylestown Hospital’s Cancer Rehabilitation Program was recently among the inaugural recipients of the Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute’s Centers of Excellence (PORi).

“As a designated PORi Center of Excellence, Doylestown Hospital recognizes the need for comprehensive cancer rehabilitation and the incredibly positive impact that these services have on patient quality of life, and we are proud to offer these services to our community,” said Morgan Murphy, PT DPT PORi- Certified Oncology Rehabilitation Specialist.

According to the American Cancer Society[1], “…despite the high occurrence of cancer-related disability, rehabilitation is largely underutilized even for readily treatable impairments, with receipt among survivors ranging from 1%-2%. As such, improving access to and use of rehabilitation among survivors has been identified as a priority for several organizations, including the American Cancer Society.”

Doylestown Health’s Cancer Rehabilitation Program is facilitated by physical therapists who specialize in treating cancer patients. Designed to lessen the side effects and symptoms of cancer and its treatment, and maximize recovery, these programs are carefully designed to meet each individual patient’s needs. “The goal is to help reduce disability, restore overall function, and improve quality of life,” Murphy explained, “Patients can begin at any stage or phase of their cancer diagnosis – before, during, and after treatments – but they are encouraged to begin as early as possible, as studies show that exercise can help decrease the chance of recurrence,” Murphy added.

Approximately, 1 in 4 cancer survivors report decreased quality of life due to physical problems[2]. Side effects, such as pain and fatigue, poor sleep quality, as well as cognitive and functional impairments, including balance, sexual dysfunction, and loss of strength and endurance, are common regardless of cancer type.

Appropriate rehabilitation services provide the opportunity for patients to significantly improve their quality of life through improving physical, emotional, and social wellbeing.
