Every three minutes, a person is diagnosed with a blood cancer — leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma — in the United States. To hear “you have cancer” is believed to be one of the darkest times in a person’s life. But the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is working to brighten the path for people with blood cancer.
With its 2022 Light The Night® campaign, LLS is bringing together communities to share hope and light — two things that can feel needed and inspiring to those contending with the ripple effects of blood cancer.
What Is Light The Night?
Light The Night is a fundraising campaign benefiting LLS and its funding of research to find blood cancer cures. Coming together for a common goal, friends, family, and coworkers
form fundraising walk teams. Every fall, participants in communities across North America join together carrying illuminated lanterns to take steps to end cancer — white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer.
This year, Doylestown Health is the Word of Hope Sponsor for the BucksMont Light The Night held at Central Park.

The Pandemic’s Effects
The global COVID-19 pandemic magnified the issues patients face beyond health concerns to include added distress, new financial worries, loneliness, and uncertainty. In 2020 and 2021, the pandemic stood in the way of any in-person Light The Night events, but impactful virtual walks still took place across the country bringing the same level of passion and dedication to fight blood cancer.
This year, the walk will return to Central Park in Doylestown — the first time since 2019.
“We are excited to be back in person after two years. Our participants from Corporate to Friends and Family Teams are happy to be going back to Central Park again for this event and are looking forward to raising their lanterns and walking to bring light to the darkness of cancer,” says Monique Riotto, campaign development manager for Light The Night.
Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, LLS remained focused on its mission priorities: Research, Education & Support and Policy & Advocacy, according to information from LLS. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has invested more than $1.5 billion in cutting-edge blood cancer research worldwide, and its support has been instrumental in the development of nearly every breakthrough in blood cancer treatment.
