GENEVIEVE SANTAYANA, DO

A board-certified family medicine physician, Dr. Santayana earned her medical degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency at Jefferson Health – Northeast in Philadelphia and her geriatric fellowship at Abington – Jefferson Health in Abington, PA. The state also approves her to certify patients with serious conditions for medical marijuana use.

Experience

As a child, Dr. Santayana knew she wanted to go into medicine. Her first job as a teenager was working in a nursing home in Connecticut. She’s come a long way since then and has fulfilled her dream. As part of her geriatric (medical care for older adults) fellowship, she learned to evaluate and treat dementia and geriatric syndromes. She hopes to share her specialized knowledge with patients and associates in her first position as an attending physician at Shady Retreat.

Philosophy of Care

“I feel like it’s so important to treat the patient and not the numbers (from labs and diagnostic imaging). A lot of times, providers miss what the patient is saying because too much attention is paid to the numbers,” Dr. Santayana says. “I am proud of the way I connect with my patients in that they feel comfortable and heard with me. My job is to be my patients’ advocate. So when patients feel heard, it develops a greater patient-physician relationship and leads to better outcomes in care.”
