Doylestown Health Begins its First-Ever Residency in Family Medicine

Family Medicine physicians provide comprehensive healthcare for the whole family — from newborns to seniors. They are primary care physicians who are often patients’ first point of contact with their health concerns. Part of what makes Family Medicine physicians special is they care for entire families and consider how the health of each member affects the others.

Our Family Medicine physicians provide high-quality care in private practices throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties. To add to our culture of healthcare excellence and prepare for our second century of delivering outstanding care, we are excited to announce our accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for our first-ever medical residency in Family Medicine.

What It Means

Our recent accreditation means we can start our Family Medicine Residency program in July, 2023. This initiative will offer our residents (medical school graduates) a robust learning experience with our dedicated medical team so they can develop deep roots in the community, enhance their knowledge and skills, and hopefully, choose to make their permanent home here as a Family Medicine physician.

Board-certified physicians will provide one-on-one mentoring and lectures to our family medicine residents who will also have the opportunity to rotate through various specialty areas to become well-rounded family medicine physicians. The residency is a three-year program with eight residents admitted each of the three years.

“With our new Family Medicine Residency, we continue to serve as a hub for learning and education in a local, community environment,” says Dr. Scott Levy, vice president and chief medical officer of Doylestown Health. “It is also worth noting our Family Medicine service line is a nationally recognized leader, earning accolades in both population health and value-based care.”

Our residents will work in private practices and in the hospital. They will also have the opportunity to work at a new (opening summer 2023), dedicated community health clinic, called Doylestown Health Primary Care Residency Clinic, at the Health and Wellness Center in Warrington.

How It Can Benefit Our Community

Introducing a residency program at Doylestown Health is a value-add for our community.  Our experienced physicians will impart their knowledge and skills and demonstrate our patient-first philosophy through mentorship and teaching. Residents who learn and grow, and share our mission to serve our community, are more likely to stay and work here.

“Doylestown Health delivers the same high-quality care typically associated with a university setting, yet we deliver it with compassion and the convenience of being close to home. The vast majority of residents will eventually practice in a community setting so why not start there,” says Dr. Benjamin Mathews, Family Medicine Residency program director, who adds how excited he is to serve as a mentor this inaugural class of residents. “We also have direct access to specialty care, which is unique for a regional, independent community hospital.”

Not only will residents have access to leading physicians and specialists in areas like cardiology, gastroenterology, and Ob/Gyn, residents will also have the experience of working in a welcoming, friendly, and collaborative environment.

What’s more, residents will live in Doylestown or the surrounding community, so they will have the opportunity to experience all that’s great here — restaurants, shops, arts and cultural activities, and family fun, as well as a short drive to the shore, the mountains, Philadelphia, and New York City.

How to Apply

Medical students interested in applying to our program, should visit Family Medicine Residency for more information; or contact Beverly Boland, program coordinator, at FMRP@dh.org or 215.345.2867. Interviews start in December 2022.
