Volunteering at Doylestown Hospital

Volunteers serve in more than 80 different areas in the hospital, including Patient Transport, Doylestown Hospital's Gift Shop, Snack Bar and Information Desks.

  • The staff of the Volunteer Office does its best to place prospective Volunteers in the most suitable position based on interests and talents, and training is provided.
  • Assignments are made without regard to race, religion or sex.
  • The minimum age requirement for a Doylestown Hospital volunteer is 15, though applications for Teen Volunteers are accepted at age 14.
  • There is NO upper age limit. We are honored to have two (and three) generations of volunteers as part of our hospital family.

The Doylestown Hospital family treasures its Volunteers. Awards are presented in both the Teen and Adult Service Programs to those Volunteers who have reached milestones in their service. A Volunteer Luncheon is also held every spring to honor those who have donated time during the previous year.

Animal-Assisted Activity Program

Our Animal-Assisted Activity Program is a volunteer service where trained and certified therapy teams consisting of a dog and handler visit patients as they heal. Therapy dogs can deliver a dose of comfort, fun and happiness to patients, families, and members of our healthcare team.

College Student Summer Volunteer Program

The application process for the College Student Summer Program 2024 is closed. All applications have been sent, and no further applicants can be placed on the waiting list.

The application process for the College Student Summer Program 2024 will open Monday, November 13 at 9 a.m. Students should contact the Volunteer Services Office at 215.345.2204 to request an application. It is important to call quickly as only 30 applications are distributed, and admission is limited to 25 students. Students calling to request an application must speak to one of the Volunteer Services Associates; please DO NOT leave a message.

The College Student Summer Program is a ten-week program starting in late May with a required orientation and ending the second Friday of August. It is supervised by Doylestown Health's Director of Volunteer Services. Students are expected to make a full commitment to all phases of the program that will result in volunteer hours that can be reported for graduate schools. To be fair to all interested, we will only accept phone calls from student applicants; phone calls from parents of adult children/students will not be accepted.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in college classes with emphasis on the medical field.
  • Completed PA State Police Criminal Record Check, Fingerprinting and Child Abuse Clearances - not older than 1 year, MUST be submitted with application.
  • Vaccine Records, including Hepatitis B, must be submitted with application.

Program Description

The aim of the program is to give college students with a medical interest a first-hand hospital experience to acquaint them with a comprehensive healthcare setting. This program brings into focus the work and responsibility of the physicians and nurses in a modern hospital complex.

The applicant is expected to serve a minimum of 8 hours per week in existing volunteer services areas. Consistency and quality service are emphasized. The student must be committed to regular attendance.

The application process for the Pre-Med Summer Program 2024 will open on Monday, November 6 at 9 am. Students should contact the Volunteer Services Office at 215.345.2204 to request an application. Admission to the program is highly competitive and limited to twelve students; only 15 applications will be mailed to prospective participants. Students must speak to one of the Volunteer Services Associates to request an application; please DO NOT leave messages to request the application. To be fair to all interested, we will only accept phone calls from the student applicant; phone calls from parents of adult children/students will not be accepted.

Students are expected to take responsibility for the entire application process; calls from parents or other family members are not accepted.

The Pre-Med Program

This summer program is designed for college students who have completed their junior year, are over the age of 18 and are pursuing academic programs leading to medical school or Physician Assistant (PA) programs. Doylestown Health physicians assist with the program, which includes lectures and observations of procedures and medical professionals in many departments, including Emergency Department, Critical Care, Heart Institute and the Operating Room.

The Pre-Med program has been developed by the Doylestown Hospital Medical Staff and the Volunteer Department. It is a ten-week program starting in late May. The Program is supervised by Doylestown Health's director of Volunteer Services and is coordinated with a special seminar program conducted by the Doylestown Hospital's Medical Staff to introduce the students to selected phases of a medical career.

Your most current college transcripts, showing a GPA of at least 3.5, must be submitted with the application. Pre-Med students should contact the Volunteer Office directly at 215.345.2204 with any questions.

All Pre-Med Volunteers are required to pass a Criminal Record Check, FBI Fingerprint Clearance and Child Abuse Clearance. Pre-Med Students must obtain their clearances and submit these with the application.

Teen Volunteers and Volunteers for Teens

Your desire to volunteer at Doylestown Hospital is greatly appreciated. We are pleased to have 75 Teen Volunteer placement spots, but we currently have over 150 applications on the waitlist. We regret that we currently are unable to accept applications for our Teen Volunteer Program due to the overwhelming number of applications received. Teens who have submitted an application will be contacted according to your place on the waitlist when a placement spot opens. We apologize for this inconvenience and are working hard to process applications so we can start to accept new applications as soon as possible.


Prospective Teen Volunteers

  • A minimum 100-hour commitment is required when you apply to volunteer.
  • Students must be 15 years of age.
  • First come, first serve. Positions are limited.

Teens will be required to receive 2 PPD (tuberculin skin tests) and a flu shot (all provided free of charge by the hospital). More details will be given at the time of the interview.

New teen volunteers must purchase a hospital uniform shirt at the cost of $20.00.

Teens will be contacted by the Volunteer Office to schedule an interview and attend an orientation.

Graduation Project Information

Due to stringent requirements for volunteer orientation and training, as well as adherence to mandated regulations, in most cases the hospital is not able to accommodate students wishing to complete school projects. Students seeking an opportunity to complete a school project may want to consider other resources in the local community.

Volunteer FAQs

 The first step in joining our volunteer family is to call the Volunteer Office 215.345.2204.

We will send you an application so that you may tell us how you might like to help. When we receive your completed application, we will call you to arrange an interview, as opportunities become available.

 All volunteers must pass a PA State Police Criminal Record Clearance. For most Volunteer programs, this clearance is completed by the director of Volunteer Services as part of the interview process. Volunteers applying for the Animal Assisted Activity Program, the Pre-Med Program or the College Student Summer Program are required to complete and submit the PA State Police Criminal Record Clearance with their application. There is no charge to the volunteer for the PA State Police Clearance.

Volunteers who have contact with children are required by PA State Law (Act 153) to obtain FBI Fingerprint Clearance and Child Abuse Clearance. There is no charge to the volunteer for the Child Abuse Clearance; there is a charge for the FBI Fingerprint Clearance.

All Doylestown Hospital adult volunteers who work in patient contact areas must complete three clearances in order to be eligible to volunteer at the hospital. They are:
